11th October 2009 Issue 57 From the President,
Hello fellow decoupiers and welcome to another year in the decoupage calendar.
What a magnificent opening to the year with our special guest Judith Madden addressing our AGM. Judith’s work was exquisite and quite inspiring. She was only too happy to share her ideas and expertise with us. Judith and NSW Guild President, Marlies Benjamin, were delightful company and we warmly welcome them to the Queensland Guild.
Our AGM saw the return of myself as President, Barbara Chapple as Secretary and Glenda Lloyd as our trusty Treasurer. Val English continues as our newsletter editor while Claire Williams indicated her acceptance to take over as Vice-President. Thank you to my fellow office bearers for their agreement to "saddle up" for the forthcoming year.
Our first workshop and general meeting of the year to be held on October 11th sees as focus on "Wearable Art". Another fun time looks assured and a good roll-up is encouraged.
Looking forward to seeing you all then.
Regards Carol

Together we now enter a New Decoupage Year, enthused by the very inspiring morning with Judith Madden after the AGM (below are a few tips that I noted) A warm welcome to new Guild members Judith Madden and Marlies Benjamin both from NSW, and Jackie Hinderwell and Laurel Mills. Congratulations to new Vice President Claire Williams and a big thankyou to Carol Carpendale who remains in the Chair - they both can be assured of full support and help as needed from the rest of us. Appreciation should also be noted of the services given over many years by Wiera Nolan who has tendered her resignation from DGQ - many have benefited from Wiera's willingness to share her vast knowledge of decoupage. Next Meeting at Chermside Library October 11th at 9.30am. The theme for the day will be Wearable Art. Bring along your ideas as well as your materials and something on which to work (i.e. pearl shell and/or small images to cut and create designs - or anything else that fits the theme) You will notice by the Minutes that Wearable Art will be included as a category in the 2010 Ekka. A reminder - bring your mug for tea/coffee. Tentative diary dates for 2010 - February 14th; March 12th - 14th Crows Nest Workshop); April 11th; June 6th; August 8th (AGM); October 10th. (Dates yet to be confirmed by Chermside Library.) Secretary's Jottings

Most were present and saw the exquisite double sided pieces under glass and jewellery incorporating decoupage - the following may help to remind:- Judith's Tips to Extend Your Decoupage Experience
(JUDITH, I stand corrected if I have misquoted - please forgive - and THANKYOU)
- Possibilities are endless - limited only by your imagination.
- It is worthwhile to document your projects as you work.
- Use multiple resources, being forever searching for inspiration from magazines, black and white photography, samples from laminated surfaces in Kitchen shops, various stones (i.e. granite, sandtone). Analyse, break down and experiment to achieve effects. (eg. note sparkles in granite - try gold, silve and irridescant white splattered carefully with denture brush)
- Make 2 or 3 copies of your image - be prepared to scrap it, if it is not working.
- When gluing images on glass do not overlap or butt as this makes it very difficult to expel air bubbles. (Judith uses PVA). Seal images before applying paint to prevent bleeding under images.
- When attempting double sided under glass apply gesso with palette knife to build up. Then concentrate on a smooth surface. Between the "2 sides" of underglass item - seal well between "sides". Use appropriate coloured gesso (i.e do not use black under a light finish as this will darken colours). Do not apply gesso until no light shows through paint when held up)
- Allow extra time for drying inside articles as fumes build up and re-act.
- Avoid wearing rings or watches or long fingernails when working inside an article to avoid scratches.
- It is risky to use a machine sander when working on glass.
- Coloured glass can work well with the right images.
- Products mentioned as being used - Gesso (black, white and gold), variegated gold leaf, black boot polish over silver leaf for old mirror effect, irridescant white paint, rich gold paint, irridescant silver paint, scraps of shell.
Update re weekend in Crows Nest, March 12-14, 2010 - I have notified Crows Nest Caravan Park that the group plans to be there that weekend, and secured the area for the workshop. Also 6 ensuite cabins have been set aside and will be held until the end of January. Please secure your cabin by that date by phoning 07 4698 1269, and mention that you are referring to one of the cabins booked in the name of the Decoupage Group by Barbara Chapple. (They are building new cabins which should be completed by then, so probably there will be plenty of vacancies after that date, but not guaranteed.)
